December 7, 2010: Microsoft Next Generation Entertainment Initiative Reception, Los Angeles. The USC School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media Division and Microsoft will celebrate our new Next Generation Entertainment Initiative with a reception and demonstrations of student works. (By invitation.)

November 12, 2010: Startl Design Mobile Learning Boost, San Francisco. I will be participating in this workshop for mobile learning apps, giving feedback to several of the teams.

October 9, 2010: Indiecade, Culver City. I’ll be participating in the “Iron Game Designer Challenge” with Jenova Chen, Frank Lantz, Richard Lemarchand and a bunch of other amazing folk as we compete for the honorary title of “Iron Game Designer” at this year’s Indiecade Festival.

August 12-14, 2010: 3G Summit, Chicago. I’ll be participating in this conference and workshop at Columbia College on the topic of gender and gaming along with Susana Ruiz, Mary Flanagan, Jennifer Jenson, and Erin Robinson. We’ll be working with about 50 high school girls on game concepts and prototypes. Also, while I’m there, I’m giving a talk about The Night Journey.

July 28, 2010: SIGGRAPH. I’ll be speaking in the Studio to a group of Girl Scouts working on their Game Design Badge! As a former scout, it’s about time they gave a badge for Game Design — and where is mine?

June 14-17, 2010: Humanities Gaming Institute. I’ll be participating in this several week workshop along with Anne Balsamo and Ian Bogost. While I’m there, I’ll be giving a talk and leading a couple hands-on workshops.

June 3, 2010: UC Irvine. I’ll be speaking at the Irvine Center for Computer Games and Virtual Worlds Lecture Series on my experimental game work, including the Night Journey and Walden projects.

April 30, 2010: American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting. I’ll be presenting at a structured poster session with two of my grad students, Sean Plott and Daniel Ponce, on the work we’ve been doing with the UCLA CRESST Center on Aligning Game Mechanics with Learning Goals.

April 21-23, 2010: Clash of Realities 2010. I’ll be a keynote speaker, talking on designing experimental games, including the Night Journey project at this game conference in Cologne, Germany.

April 16, 2010: NAEA Art Education and Social Justice Conference. I’ll be speaking with Alan Gershenfeld, Kellee Santiago, Asi Burak and several other folks on a panel about video games and social change.

March 29, 2010: USC Visions and Voices. I’ll be participating on a panel entitled “Joystick Nation: Theater, Film and Interactive Gaming in 2020.” The panel is moderated by Mary Kaplan, director of the Norman Lear Center at USC, and focuses on the future of entertainment.

March 10, 2010: Game Developer’s Conference. I’ll be presenting on a panel at the IGDA Education Summit Industry and Academia: In Search of the Love.

February 20, 2010: Digital Media and Learning Conference. I’ll be speaking with Zoe Corwin and Victor Garcia of the CHEPA Center on “The Promises and Problems of the University as a New Digital Landscape.” We’ll be presenting on the process of designing the Pathfinder game, a game to help youth better understand the college application process and succeed at getting through that process.
